Although pranayama can be extremely beneficial for your physical and mental health, if practiced incorrectly it can also have a detrimental impact on your body and mind. Your breath is a powerful instrument and must be respected. Take your time and do not rush. Stay within your limits. If at any time you should feel unwell or light-headed then stop. Also, if you have had any recent surgery – especially to the abdominal or chest area – if you have heart or blood pressure issues, or have any other serious health concerns or issues then you should not practice pranayama without first consulting a medical professional.
